Democrats reject offer to extend unemployment benefit short-term

سی بی اس آمریکا | No comments

In late-night negotiations with congressional Democrats on Thursday, White House officials offered a short-term extension of the popular unemployment benefit paying out-of-work Americans $600 per week, a CARES Act provision that formally expires Friday. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer rejected the offer, arguing that Republicans don’t understand that the situation requires a solution that is larger in scope.

“We had a long discussion and we just don’t think they understand the gravity of the problem,” Schumer told reporters after he and Pelosi met with White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

Pelosi noted that it had been 10 weeks since House Democrats passed a $3 trillion bill in May that would have extended t...

Meet the 12-year-old who spoke at John Lewis’ funeral

سی بی اس آمریکا | No comments

As hundreds celebrated the life of Congressman John Lewis on Thursday, a 12-year-old Tennessee boy who recited one of Lewis’ favorite poems stood out during the civil rights icon’s funeral. Tybre Faw delivered one of the most memorable moments of the star-studded goodbye.

In front of a crowd that included three former U.S. presidents and civil rights leaders, Faw helped eulogize Lewis by reading British poet William Ernest Henley’s “Invictus” at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church. The poem is said to have inspired the likes of former South African president Nelson Mandela and others.

“John Lewis was my hero, my friend. Let’s honor him by getting into that ‘good trouble,'” the boy said, referencing a famous line by the late congressman.

Thousands of new virus cases reported in New Jersey

سی بی اس آمریکا | No comments

It’s a trend no state wants to follow, but New Jersey is joining the list of states seeing an uptick in coronavirus cases. The increase comes as virus hospitalizations in neighboring New York are continuing to go down.

In New Jersey, the rate of transmission rose, with more than 2,000 cases added in four days, CBS New York reported on Thursday.  Governor Phil Murphy said a total of more than 180,000 cases – and nearly 14,000 deaths – have been reported across the state since the start of the pandemic.

“Nobody’s sitting on their hands right now. Everybody is kind of anticipating a second wave. Everybody’s frantically getting ready,” Dr. Stavros Christoudias of the New Jersey Doctor-Patient Alliance told the station.

Christoudias said he’s not surprised by the uptick in COVID-19 ca...
